Car affordability calculator
Four conditions decide what a car costs you each month: the payment, the vehicle price, the term and the cash you put down. Move one and the others answer. Hold the ones you will not change, and the board shows which of the rest has to give.
Payment is now $1,154.

Not estimated, because no published source sets it
Every other figure on this page comes from a published schedule or from you. This one has no authority to name. A lender sets it when it looks at your credit, the vehicle and the term.
What we can show you is how much it matters. The table below runs the same plan at two and four points higher.
| Rate | Payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5% | $1,154 | $10,262.87 |

Same vehicle, same term, same cash. Only the rate moves. This is an estimate, not a quote.

Not included, and not estimated
- County and district fees. They vary by where the vehicle is registered, and California publishes no single figure for them.
- Smog certification and smog abatement. Whether either applies turns on the vehicle's age, its fuel type and where it was last registered.
- Electronic filing charge. A dealer may pass through what a first-line service provider charges it, so there is no set amount.
- Weight fees. They apply to commercial vehicles rated by unladen or declared gross weight, not to passenger cars.
- Nonresident and out-of-state charges. A vehicle last registered outside California is charged under a different schedule.

A worked example
A $55,000 new vehicle in California, financed over five years at 6.5% with $2,000 down, comes to $60,992.33 out the door and $1,154 a month.
Those are the inputs in full: a new vehicle at $55,000, sales tax at 9.5%, a $85 document processing charge, $2,000 cash down, sixty months, and an annual percentage rate of 6.5%. No trade-in. The rate is a working figure, not a quote.
| Vehicle price | $55,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Taxable measure, price plus the document charge | $55,085.00 |
| Sales tax at 9.5% | $5,233.08 |
| Registration charges | $674.25 |
| Dealer charges | $85.00 |
| Out the door | $60,992.33 |
| Amount financed | $58,992.33 |
| Monthly payment | $1,154 |
| Total interest over the term | $10,262.87 |
Two points of rate on that same vehicle moves the payment from $1,154 to $1,210 a month. Nothing else about the car changes.
Ask for a $1,200 payment on this vehicle and the board answers with sixty months at $1,154, not $1,200. Lenders write terms in whole years, so the payment lands at or under what you asked for rather than exactly on it. Forty-eight months would overshoot.
Where these figures come from
Registration charges come from the California DMV fee schedule, 2026, and the fee breakdown above names the statute behind each one. The schedule is reviewed each January, because the transportation improvement fee tiers move on January 1 by statute. The trade-in treatment is CDTFA Regulation 1655(b)(1): California does not deduct a trade-in from the taxable measure, and the out-the-door calculator works that through. Your tax rate, the dealer’s charges and the interest rate are figures you enter, not figures transcribed from a schedule.
