Not included, because no published rule sets them

  • County and district fees. These vary by where the vehicle is registered and California publishes no single figure for them.
  • Smog certification and smog abatement. Whether either applies turns on the vehicle’s age, its fuel type and where it was last registered.
  • Electronic filing charge. A dealer may pass through what a first-line service provider charges it, so there is no set amount.
  • Weight fees. These apply to commercial vehicles rated by unladen or declared gross weight, not to passenger cars.
  • Nonresident and out-of-state charges. A vehicle last registered outside California is charged under a different schedule.

Government charges are calculated from California’s published fee schedules, which the state revises. Dealer charges vary by dealer. Every figure here is an estimate rather than a quote, and your contract is the only place these amounts are settled.

CarOracle’s service fee is separate from these charges and is not included in any figure on this page. See what we charge for the service.

How this is calculated

Sales tax is computed on the taxable measure rather than on the sticker price. The vehicle price and the dealer document processing charge sit inside that measure. Registration charges, the California tire fee and a qualifying electronic filing charge sit outside it.

California does not deduct a trade-in from the taxable measure. CDTFA Regulation 1655(b)(1) puts the amount allowed as trade-in value inside the measure of tax, so a trade reduces what you finance and does not reduce what you are taxed. Most states do the opposite, and most national calculators are built for most states.

Registration charges come from California’s published fee schedule. The registration amount, the highway patrol fee and the ownership transfer charge are fixed. The vehicle license fee is a rate applied to the purchase price. The transportation improvement fee is a tier, and which tier you land in is decided by the vehicle’s value.

Money is carried to the cent and rounded once, at the end. That is why five new tires read $8.75 rather than $9, and why the rows add up to the total on screen as well as in the model.

A worked example

A $42,000 new vehicle, registered at 8.25%

Vehicle price
$42,000
Document processing charge, §4456.5(a) cap
$85
Taxable measure
$42,085
Sales tax at 8.25%
$3,472
Registration, CHP, license fee and improvement fee
$581
California tire fee, 4 tires
$7.00
Out-the-door
$46,145

A $15,000 trade-in would take $15,000 off what you finance and nothing off the $3,472. That difference is $1,237.50, and it is the figure most national calculators get wrong in California.

What this assumes

  • The vehicle is bought from a licensed California dealer and registered in California.
  • The tax rate you enter is the rate for the address where the vehicle will be registered. The statewide rate plus any district taxes is a single published figure tied to one address, and district boundaries do not follow ZIP codes.
  • County and district registration charges are not included. California publishes no single figure for them.
  • Smog, electronic filing, weight and nonresident charges are not included. Whether each applies turns on rules that are not published as a schedule.
  • A trade-in is treated as cash applied at signing. Negative equity is added to the amount financed.
  • On a used vehicle whose registration is already current, the annual charges are not shown as due. Where the registration is expired or unknown, they are a planning estimate and any penalty is excluded.

Where these figures come from

Registration charges come from the California DMV fee schedule, 2026, and the table above names the statute behind each one. The trade-in treatment is CDTFA Regulation 1655(b)(1). Your tax rate and the dealer’s charges are figures you enter, not figures transcribed from a schedule.
